I don't know how this got onto the LDP list (which I'm not on),
so I should clarify, I think, in case my original mail wasn't there.

I was trying to give context for people to understand why a splash
screen is considered good from a commercial point of view -- i.e.,
why most shop-bought software has them.  I am not advocating splash
screens.

For SoftQuad Panorma (an SGML viewer that was either stand-alone or
